The Great Wall in on the top of mountains     Recently selected as one of Condé Nast Traveller's Hot 100 hotels in the world - the only one in China - the Commune is a designer hamlet of 11 villas situated a couple of kilometers (and half-a-universe) away from the tourist bus kitsch of the Great Wall at Badaling. It is a private collection of contemporary architecture designed by 12 Asian architects. It was exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia in 2002 winning a special prize. Ms Zhang Xin, the mastermind and investor for the project, was recognized for her “bold personal initiative which emphasizes the role of 12 Asian architects in building privately-owned houses in a definitively contemporary manner.”
